One hundred and nine years following the death of the greatest actor of his generation Sir Henry Irving, in the Midland Hotel in Bradford, live theatre comes to the hotel for the first time as , Madeupical Theatre Company presents three performances of Losing The Plot in the luxurious surroundings of the Princes Ballroom. One of Yorkshires premier ballrooms will be transformed into a theatre on the 9th, 10th and 11th of October, each of the performances will be dedicated to the memory of Sir Henry Irving, who passed away at the foot of the main staircase in the Hotels foyer on the 13th of October 1905, following a performance in Bradford. He became the first actor to be knighted for his achievements, his sudden death shocked and saddened the nation.
Madeupical Theatre Company are proud to honor his memory in this unique setting. Losing the Plot is a comedy set on an allotment , focusing on a diverse and at times bizarre set of characters who have plots in the fictional Wellingfield Allotments. Featuring a megalomaniac, a feckless idiot, a gay couple, a Russian temptress, a Casanova and an alcoholic to name but a few.
While Losing the Plot, is a far cry from the Shakespearean and Romantic Melodrama in which Sir Henry excelled, it is fitting, that approaching the 109th anniversary of his death, his contribution to modern theatre in particular his development of gas lighting for his spectacular productions is recalled.
This is a unique opportunity for theatre lovers in Bradford and further afield to honor one of theatres true greats while enjoying a modern and fresh new comedy.
Gary Peacock, general manager of The Midland Hotel, says, “We are very excited to be able to play a part in hosting a novel and innovative project and hope that theatre lovers in the region Will support the event wholeheartedly.
