Church House Conference Centre has been recognised by the Green Business Tourism Scheme for its commitment to the environment.
The historic Grade II listed building in the heart of Westminster achieved Silver against the new Green Tourism Version 5 Criteria when it was audited in January. Green Tourism is the national sustainable tourism certification scheme for the UK. Originally developed in partnership with Visit Scotland, it is now the only certification scheme validated by Visit Britain, through the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) and is the largest and most sustainable tourism certification programme in the world.
The venue was assessed against a rigorous set of criteria, covering areas such as energy and water efficiency, waste management and biodiversity. Initiatives put in place by the venue to improve its impact on the environment include recycling of materials, the use of recycled materials where possible, in-house water bottling facilities, water reduction systems and sourcing products from local and sustainable sources.
The Green Business Tourism Scheme report commended the achievement of the team at Church House and praised its use of recycled materials, responsible sourcing and relationships with sustainable suppliers.
Church House Conference Centre’s sustainability programme was co-ordinated by Operations Manager Alison Forsyth. She comments: “Being such an historic venue, it is a challenge to maintain sustainable and efficient practices, so it is a great achievement for Church House to have been awarded Silver under the Green Business Tourism Scheme. The standards needing to be reached for this accolade are extremely high and the auditing process is rigorous which makes it even more satisfying.
“We make every effort to ensure all staff and partners are committed to our green policies and work in a sustainable way. For example, our catering contractor, Harbour & Jones Events, has implemented an ongoing review of sustainability processes in food supply and equipment procurement with a view to reducing “food miles”. The report provided following the auditing process has highlighted some future recommendations, and as part of our commitment to continuous improvement we will make every effort to implement these in future to help Church House reduce its impact on the environment. Using the carbon calculator provided by Green Business Tourism Scheme, we are now able to accurately judge our true impact on the environment, allowing us to maintain and improve our performance as we move towards becoming a carbon neutral venue.”
